Talent On Tap: November

TALENT ON TAP // NEW MUSIC NOVEMBER

BROUGHT TO YOU BY BURLEIGH BREWING CO.

Words by Samantha Morris

November’s playlist is a vibrant celebration of diverse genres – from deep house to retro 70s soul, chilled vibes and serious rock riffage. Karl S Williams is back with ‘Heartwood (Solo)’, Mad Wxrld shares rhythmic energy alongside a captivating music video, and our spotlight shines bright on 15yo guitar wizard Myles.

Plenty to get your ears around – get amongst it, Gold Coast.

SPOTLIGHT: Myles shines bright with new single Blame

At just 15 years old, Myles is already making waves in the local music industry and with debut single ‘Blame’ due for release 8 November, that trajectory is likely to continue at a fast pace. A rocking, guitar-driven track, ‘Blame’ blends blues, grunge and rock with killer riffs and raw emotion. It also showcases Myles’ growing talent as a songwriter and an exceptionally talented guitarist (just listen for the solos). If you’ve seen Myles perform around the place (he’s had sets at Marketta, played at recent GC Music Network Mingles and did a covers set at the Awards welcome reception), you’ll know that what this young man boasts in musical talent is equally matched by his stage presence. Produced by George Carpenter and featuring bassist Ian Peres, ‘Blame’ is powerful and immersive, a little gritty and full of depth, with solos and vocals demonstrating why Myles is more than just one to watch – he’s one who has well and truly arrived.

Penthouse heights for Zenith

Moody, sparse and dark at times and straight up rock at others, ‘Penthouse’ is the new five-track EP from Gold Coast four-piece Zenith. Describing their own music as existential, this release is full of emotion, coupled with heavy guitar tones and punchy kicks. There’s a little experimentation going on, with the band delving into a mix of sub-genres to create an EP that showcases their adaptability as well as their attention to detail. The stark difference between the dark electro-vibes of track one ‘Penthouse’ and heavy rock riffage of instrumental track four ‘Caveman’ means this EP is a smorgasbord of tasty treats for lovers of well-crafted music.

Folk front and centre for Julie Hayes

Emotive songstress Julie Hayes has released two beautiful singles with ‘I am Free’ out in September and ‘Hold Me’ out 1 November. With a gentle approach to songwriting, each song allows Julie’s voice to hold court with minimal instrumentation – including strings and percussion – coming together to create a full and wholesome sound. While these are Julie’s first formal releases, she’s been making music on the Gold Coast for many years.

Feeling the energy with Grace Luisa

Originally from the UK, now calling the GC home, pop artist Grace Luisa has a penchant for experimenting with genres such as DnB, house and EDM, giving her sound a zesty twist. New track ‘Can you feel it’ follows on from a suite of tracks that deliver energetic vibes with break-downs and a catchy chorus perfect for dance floors or road tripping playlists. She says she’s looking forward to collaborating with other artists, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Jollee drops Synaesthesia

Led by electrifying frontwoman Brooke Mowett, Gold Coast four-piece Jollee is a powerful force, and their new track ‘Synaesthesia’ adds to their sonic arsenal. With dynamic contrasts and rich instrumentation as well as poetic lyrics and emotive delivery, this track takes us on an unforgettable aural journey. It’s catchy pop-rock with compelling vocals and face-melting guitar riffs. Kinda perfect, if you ask me.

Heartfelt balladry from Jase Lansky

Gold Coast artist Jase Lansky delivers pure emotion in latest single ‘Hurtin’ Over You’ – a soul-stirring blend of country and folk, showcasing Jase’s raw vocal prowess and heartfelt songwriting. With an element of melancholic melody alongside gentle acoustic strumming, and honest lyrics, ‘Hurtin’ Over You’ invites listeners into a space of introspection and connection on the back of heartache and longing. There’s a sense of sincerity that makes it a standout in Jase’s repertoire.

TCAT and friends are Back Again

A few months since his recent Nightcore collaborations, TCAT has returned with a new dance floor anthem titled ‘Back Again’. This deep house track features the stunning vocals of US singer Okafuwa and production help from India’s AlfaRex and Illenoid, two underground producers starting to make a name in dance music. The song, co-written by TCAT and Okafuwa, is a captivating blend of emotive lyrics and dynamic beats, creating an infectious energy that’s perfect for the dance floor, long drives, or just a daily rotation. The synergy between the artists is palpable, with Okafuwa’s vocals soaring over a meticulously crafted soundscape. ‘Back Again’ is sure to find its way into many playlists, showcasing TCAT’s ability to craft memorable dance tracks that resonate with a wide audience.

Jamie Lamont wants to be Born Again

Jamie Lamont’s debut single ‘Born Again’ is an emotional powerhouse heralding her arrival on the Australian music scene with a bang. Jamie crafts a track that seamlessly blends retro 70s vibes with contemporary sensibilities with her powerful and soulful voice front and centre every step of the way – and I’ve seen this lady perform live. Girl can sing!!! ‘Born Again’ delves into the universal longing for the innocence of childhood, wrapped in lyrics that resonate deeply with the trials of adulthood. The track’s production is lush yet intimate, allowing Jamie’s larger-than-life vocals to shine through, while the nostalgic melodies and poignant lyrics invite listeners to reflect on simpler times. A promising young artist, ‘Born Again’ positions Jamie as a formidable new talent.

Tuxedo Man’s release by Chrisc

Chrisc’s latest single, “Tuxedo Man,” is a soulful track delving into the theme of betrayal and the quest for understanding. The song uses the metaphor of a man clothed in sophistication and charm, only to reveal a core of deception and pain. Chrisc’s soulful vocals and poignant lyrics capture the complexity of emotions experienced by a woman coming to terms with the hurt inflicted by someone she trusted. The track’s heartfelt exploration of disillusionment make it a resonant addition to Chrisc’s growing discography.

Karl S Williams’ ‘Heartwood (Solo)’ a masterpiece

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of the original ‘Heartwood,’ this collection of solo versions of those songs is nothing short of breathtaking: a masterclass in emotional resonance and superior artistry. Karl’s raw, soulful vocals and intricate guitar, piano and banjo work create an intimate experience, drawing listeners into the very essence of each song. The stripped-back arrangements bring a new depth and clarity, allowing the lyrics and haunting melodies to shine. This album not only showcases Karl’s exceptional talent as a composer and performer but also his ability to connect deeply with his audience (it’s made me cry several times today). ‘Heartwood (Solo)’ is a timeless treasure, destined to be cherished for years to come.

Trust Me, pleads Mad Wxrld

Mad Wxrld’s new single ‘Trust Me’ is a standout piece, expertly blending chill vibes with rhythmic energy. The track, produced in collaboration with Sloth Productions, begins with laid-back, atmospheric verses that lead into an irresistibly catchy chorus. Mad Wxrld’s freestyle approach gives the song an effortless flow, while the accompanying music video, filmed by Blacklisted Visions at Playground Photography Studios, visually captures the song’s engaging energy. ‘Trust Me’ is a captivating listen from start to finish.
