Meet the artists taking to the Sundown stage

Sundown is hitting the streets of Southport next weekend with a killer line-up of local and national names taking to the stage.

With Gold Coast names like Lyric, Buttered and Chutney, alongside national headliners The Rions and Hope D, Sundown is the free pop-up music event the Gold Coast has been waiting for!

HAAAVE YOU MET THE HEADLINERS?

Peep the set times and get to know the artists gracing the Sundown line-up next Saturday:

THE RIONS:

These Sundown co-headliners have come a long way from humble beginnings as four schoolmates in the Northern Beaches of NSW. Now selling out tours across the nation, the Sydney-based indie rock band had a massive 2023, with the release of their debut EP ‘Minivan’ taking them from ‘ones to watch’ to a charting Aussie act. The Rions have continued to carve out their own sound, with their recent single ‘Sweet Cocoon’ receiving well over 150,000 streams on Spotify.

Citing influence from Arctic Monkeys, Dayglow and The Beatles, their signature song writing style has charmed listeners globally, with some 28 million streams worldwide across their catalogue. The Rions are hitting pause on their ‘Scary Movies’ Tour to stop in and jam out with the Sundown crowds.

HOPE D:

Brisbane’s Hope D has been blessing listeners’ ears for more than 5 years now with her signature alt pop-rock sound. Hope D started her career by posting live-looping videos to YouTube in her teenage bedroom plastered with beer coasters and gig tickets. Her confessional coming-of-age anthems have resulted in successful gambits in the Queensland Music Awards and triple j’s Hottest 100 Countdown, where her song ‘Second’ was ranked #69 in 2021. Her latest album ‘Clash of the Substance’ is out now and we highly recommend you put this one on repeat! Recently completing her tour for the album, Hope D is ready to co-headline the Sundown main stage.

JEM CASSAR-DALEY:

This indie-pop songstress has the eyes of the nation on her at the moment. Recently, Jem Cassar-Daley took out Song of the Year and the Pop Award at the Queensland Music Awards for her track ‘King of Disappointment’. The catchy tune has also just been nominated for Independent Song of the Year at the 2024 AIR Awards (killing it!). After touring with artists like Thelma Plum and Busby Marou, Jem’s Sundown performance is sure to warm your heart with her celestial vocals and timeless lyrics. Beyond her musical prowess, Jem stands as a proud Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung woman, inheriting a legacy of storytelling that informs her artistry.

CHUTNEY:

Chutney have already left an imprint within the South East Queensland music scene with their electrifying live shows and expressive song writing. The four members combined in late 2019 and have since continued to hit the mark with their own brand of condiment rock, soaked in vivid lyricism, slick guitar lines, pounding drums, throbbing bass lines and a whole lot of attitude. Available on all streaming services this week, their latest single ‘Untidy’ is the band’s first release for 2024, and amidst their ‘Untidy’ Tour, Chutney are popping home to deliver some Gold Coast indie-rock to the Sundown stage. Can I get an ‘Up The Chut’!

BUTTERED:

The creative collaboration of Scott Dalton and Jackson James-Smith, Buttered are the Gold Coast’s silkiest sonic experience to grace the ears of an audience. Steering away from the traditional coastal Australian laidback acoustic sound, the two decided to follow in the footsteps of great soul artists who pushed boundaries musically, such as Stevie Wonder and D’angelo. With over 1.5 million streams of their catalogue, the group have been recognised as one of the Gold Coast’s ones to watch by securing the 2022 Gold Coast Music Award for Breakout Artist of the Year. The talent, experience and tonality that Buttered brings to a live set is one that will speak to your entire being.

LYRIC:

At just 20 years old, Gold Coast singer/songwriter and producer, Lyric, took home the Gold Coast Music Prize (for artists 25 and under) and the highly-coveted People’s Choice Award at the 2023 Gold Coast Music Awards. Writing songs for as long as she’s been able to pick up a pen, Lyric entrances audiences with her relatable lyricism and innovative production quality. Lyric’s Tik Tok viral single ‘Wine Stain’, a fiery pop ballad about falling in love with a villain, was followed up by her most recent single ‘Gravity’, which boasts 300,000+ streams on Spotify. Lyric is set to open Sundown with a charismatic performance of relatable pop tunes.

CORY HOTLINE:

Cory Hotline is the hottest new project from local DJ Cory Fletcher. With club driven beats and passion behind the decks, he’s a lover of good memes with a flair for nostalgia and everything that comes with it… Welcome to the Cory Hotline. Cory will be the SUNDOWN resident DJ set to get you and your friends up on your feet in between the live music sets throughout the day. Kicking us off at 2pm, Cory Hotline is sure to set the tone for the day.

Bring the whole family to this all-ages event and enjoy great vibes, epic beats, tasty eats, a bevvy from the pop-up bar, colourful art, markets, and more.

That’s not all! When the day is done, keep the good times going at one of the CBD’s many live music venues.

Sundown kicks off from 2pm next Saturday 25 May at Nerang Street, Southport. RSVP on Facebook now!
